City Hall approves ICERD ‘thanksgiving’ rally

(Bernama pic)KUALA LUMPUR: Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has approved the anti-ICERD (International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination) “thanksgiving” rally to be held this Saturday.
Mayor Nor Hisham Ahmad Dahlan said DBKL would only allow the organisers to use the area in front of the Sultan Abdul Samad building in Jalan Raja for the rally, which is scheduled to be held from 2pm to 6pm.
“We received an application from the organisers, comprising Muafakat (Pertubuhan Muafakat Sejahtera Masyarakat Malaysia), Ummah (Gerakan Pembela Ummah) and Daulat (Persatuan Bekas Angkatan Tentera Tidak Berpencen Malaysia), on Nov 27.
“During the rally, they must abide by the stipulated conditions. Jalan Raja as well as Dataran Merdeka will be closed that day,” he said after meeting Kuala Lumpur police chief Mazlan Lazim here today.
Nor Hisham said DBKL would get the cooperation of the various enforcement agencies, including the police, to monitor traffic and public safety.
“The police will hold a meeting on Wednesday to discuss in detail matters regarding the rally,” he said.
On Nov 23, the Prime Minister’s Office issued a statement saying that the Pakatan Harapan government would not ratify ICERD and would continue to defend the Federal Constitution.
Following the statement, Ummah secretariat head Aminuddin Yahaya announced that this Saturday’s rally at Dataran Merdeka would go ahead as a “thanksgiving” gathering.
