Protesters Gather Again In Front Of PWTC Over Rajapaksa's Presence

KUALA LUMPUR:
A group of 50 protesters gathered again in front of the entrance of Putra World Trade Centre to show dissatisfaction towards the presence of former Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa in Malaysia.

This was a continuation to a similar protest held yesterday, which called for Rajapaksa to leave the International Conference of Asian Political Parties that he was attending.

The group, believed to be from the Malaysian Indian Progressive Association, gathered in front of the building entrance at around 11am.

The group demanded for the organisers to confront them outside and provide explanation on why Rajapaksa was invited to the conference.

Police spokeperson later informed the group that Rajapaksa was not attending today's session, but protesters insisted that Rajapaksa should be told to left the country.

At about 11.30am, the situation grew tense when protesters got riled up by a group of PWTC staff walking past the demonstration and threw a bottle filled with water at them.

Police reacted immediately and converged on the group while some among the group tried to force their way through, resulting in a scuffle.

Protest organisers managed to calm down the rabble-rousers with several rally chants shortly after and police officers adopted a more relaxed formation in response.

However, seven light strike force members were seen gearing up with batons, riot shields, and a tear gas grenade launcher, preparing to respond with force in case the situation devolved.
