Employers Can Check Background of Security Guards or Other Employees for RM50.00

Security guards can be vetted for RM50, says company

Mark Leow, managing director of Verity Intelligence, a company that provides vetting services, said the practice of verifying workers with was not a common one among Malaysian businesses.
“I think its the mentality that people are too trusting of one another. Even when they read about something like security guards going rogue, people just think that such cases would not happen to them,” he said.
He said Verity Intelligence screens 2,500 job applicants a month, ranging from low- to executive-level employees. Almost half of them will have fake credentials.
“Most would have padded-up resumes and fake degrees, and we have found several applicants with criminal records, court cases or even forged identifications,” he said.
Leow added that some security firms don’t do checks on their guards as they are seen as low-level employees with a high turnover rate.
“Though they may seem low-level, there is a lot of danger in hiring the wrong person as we have seen recently,” he said.
However, Leow said that business owners could perform their own vetting process on guards as there were companies that offered affordable screening.
“In the case of Verity Intelligence, we would go through the individuals static data by verifying his I.C. with the National Registration Department. We can check his criminal and civil litigation background, as well as their financial status,” he said.
He advised companies to also vet higher-level employees as fraudsters were a risk to any organisation.
