Ahmad Najadi murder: Koong Swee Kwan charged with Arab-Malaysian Bank founder’s murder

KUALA LUMPUR: A tow truck operator was charged in a magistrate's court here Thursday with murdering Arab-Malaysian Bank founder Hussain Ahmad Najadi and attempting to murder the founder's wife Cheong Mei Kuen.

He was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the death sentence if convicted.

He also faces second charge of attempting to murder, which caused injury to Cheong, 49, at the same time and place.

To this charge, Koong was accused under section 307 of the same act, which provides a maximum of 20 years' jail on conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Wan Shaharudin Wan Ladin had asked for a mention date pending forensic report.

No plea was recorded for the charges which were read in Bahasa Malaysia.

The court later fixed Dec 9 for mention.

Koong was unrepresented.

On July 29, it was reported that Najadi was shot dead while his wife was seriously injured when they emerged from the Kuan Yin temple.

The gunman who crept from behind, fired randomly at Hussain and his wife at close range, killing him on the spot.

On Aug 16, the taxi driver Chew Siang Chee, 45, who allegedly ferried Koong, claimed trial in a Sessions Court to possessing a pistol and four live bullets.
