An Air India plane is believed to have crashed in the city of Ahmedabad, a local TV station reported.
Initial reports, however, said thick plumes of smoke enveloped the site of the tragedy, Reuters reported.
The Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft carrying 242 passengers is believed to be en route to Birmingham, United Kingdom.
The incident is believed to have occurred shortly after the plane took off from Ahmedabad airport.
