COVID-19: New infections continue to climb past 4,000

KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Health recorded a total of 4,020 new COVID-19 cases as of midnight Thursday (July 7), the highest since April.

The cumulative total now stands at 4,586,322 since the pandemic hit Malaysia in March 2020.

According to the data from the COVIDNOW portal, there were nine new imported cases, with 4,011 cases being local infections.

The country is experiencing a rise in COVID-19 cases again, just days after MOH warned of two emerging highly transmissible Omicron sub-variants.


Meanwhile, the MOH also reported a total of 1,718 new recoveries, which takes the total number of those recovered and discharged to 4,516,688.

Currently, there are 33,839 active cases, with 45 patients admitted in the ICU, while 23 of them in need of breathing assistance.

Three new deaths have been registered last night, taking the death toll to 35,795.

Malaysia administered a total of 11,475 vaccine doses on Thursday, with 85.9 per cent of the population having received at least one dose, while 83.7 per cent are fully vaccinated and 49.5 per cent have received booster jabs.
