SHAH ALAM: A political activist was brought to the Sessions Court here and another court in Selayang to face charges of posting seditious words on Facebook that allegedly belittled the royal institutions of Selangor and Johor.
Ali Abd Jalil, 29, pleaded not guilty to two counts of posting seditious words on his Facebook page last month that insulted the Sultan of Selangor and another sedition charge resulting from one of his postings on Facebook in January that touched on the Johor royalty.
At the Sessions Court here, the former hotel staff was charged with two counts of posting seditious words on his Facebook page at the Commercial Investigation Depart­ment of the Selangor police headquarters in Section 9 here on Aug 18.
Ali claimed trial to both charges, under Section 4(1)(c) of the Sedition Act 1948 (Act 15).
Judge Mohamed Mokhzani Mokhtar set RM4,000 bail for each charge and ordered Ali to surrender his passport to the court.
He said Ali could apply to get back the passport if he needed to use it.
The court fixed Oct 8 for mention.
Lawyer Michelle Jesudas said her client would post the bail today.
At the Selayang Sessions Court, Ali was accused of posting a remark on Facebook on Jan 21 at a premises in Sunway Batu Caves.
He was accused of posting seditious material onwww.facebook.com/kapitalis.bangsat through three separate comments using the Rejimen Anarki account.
The comments include belittling the Johor Sultanate and calling for the state’s royal institution to be abolished.
DPP Suhaimi Ibrahim applied for a mention date to enable both parties to hand over documents.
He also proposed bail to be set at RM5,000. Michelle did not raise any objection.
Judge Ahmad Fairuz Mohd Fuzi fixed Oct 10 for mention.
Ali posted the RM5,000 bail.
Michelle told reporters later that she had been informed that her client would face another sedition charge in a Johor Baru court upon completion of the investigation papers.
