Petronas Issues Public Apology For Its ‘Black And White’ Angpow Design

  • Recently, photos of the initial angpow by Petronas were circulated on social media and angered many netizens

    • People have been criticising Petronas on both Facebook and Twitter for the black and white design of the initial angpow, saying that it is insulting to the Chinese communityas the white colour symbolises death and is only used for funerals.
  • According to a source from Petronas, however, the angpows were internally circulated and not distributed to the public

The angpow features a watercolour artwork designed by artist Yee Ping Yan.
    • The source said the angpow was originally printed and circulated only between a few Petronas employees.

The source also stated that a new batch of angpows with a red background was printed after feedback from the employees, and they have been distributed widely since.
  • Following public outcry, Petronas issued an apology on their Facebook page earlier today

    • In the statement, the company also clarified that the background used in the initial angpow design was "light coloured" that has been mistaken for white

The same artwork from the first angpow can also be seen in the e-greeting feature on the company's website, which is set in a light grey background.
