BESTFBKL:
If someone who is as "connected" and "influental" as Puan Sri Sabrina can be arrested and handcuffed for a FB posting, this should serve as a lesson to everyone to be careful what you post.

JOHOR BARU: An environmental activist who is a Puan Sri has been remanded for three days for allegedly insulting Johor Ruler Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar.
The Sessions Court yesterday granted the police’s remand application to investigate Pertubuhan Pelindung Khazanah Alam Malaysia (Peka) president Puan Sri Shariffa Sabrina Syed Akil, 54.
The order was granted by the court’s assistant registrar Hidayah Abdul Manaf.
Also remanded for three days was the NGO’s administrative assistant, Norhayati Shahrom, 51.
Both women, represented by counsel Siti Kasim, were brought to court in a police vehicle at 11am.
Johor police chief Comm Datuk Seri Wan Ahmad Najmuddin Mohd said Shariffa Sabrina and Norhayati were remanded for making comments deemed insulting against Sultan Ibrahim on Facebook.
He said the women were detained in Batu Tiga, Shah Alam, on Thursday under Section 223 (1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act after a police report was lodged against them.
Police have seized their mobile phones and SIM cards.
Siti Kasim, on her FB page, posted a photo of Shariffa Sabrina and Norhayati outside the courtroom and questioned the need to remand them.
In a statement yesterday, Peka, which was formed to create awareness about the preservation and sustenance of the environment, said Shariffa Sabrina was asked to have her statement recorded by police on Wednesday.
“But when she and Norhayati went to the Shah Alam district police headquarters, they were detained and taken to Johor Baru later the same day,” it said, adding that both women had given their co-operation to police.

Sabrina Syed is prepared to pay a heavy price as she is a lover of the environment, says Peka Selangor’s Karin Lee.

PETALING JAYA: Being an activist, especially one fighting for a cause that is of little interest to the majority, is not an easy task.

It also comes with a heavy price, such as the threat of imprisonment. This is also true for Pertubuhan Pelindung Khazanah Alam Malaysia (Peka) president Shariffa Sabrina Syed Akil and administrator Norhayati Shahrom.

“This is the price Sabrina and Norhayati are willing to pay to ensure our country’s environment has a chance to survive for future generations,” Peka Selangor exco member Karin Lee told FMT.

He was commenting on the duo’s arrest for allegedly insulting the Johor sultan in a Facebook post highlighting logging on land owned by the sultan.

Karin said Sabrina had always been an avid nature lover who had in her role as Peka president fought hard for the preservation of the environment.

Her outspokenness had also won her the reputation of a “staunch and relentless defender of the environment”.

“She has worked tirelessly with various government officials and agencies, Tenaga Nasional Bhd and even the Johor police, to help promote awareness and love of nature.

“Unfortunately, at times, her noble efforts were rebuffed, rejected and sometimes even reviled,” said Karin.

Even when faced with threats, Sabrina never cowered, he added.
