KUALA LUMPUR: The charge that Firdaus Tajuddin is facing for allegedly mobbing the Shah Alam MP last year is too light and undermines the sanctity of restricted areas like the Parliament, says Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed.
“If it was up to me, the punishment would be much heavier. But it is up to the police and the justice system,” said the Deputy Home Minister.
He feared that the charge, which carries up to a RM100 fine on conviction, could send a message that the Parliament is “not very important”.
Firdaus, the son of Deputy Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Datuk Tajuddin Abdul Rahman, had on Nov 24 last year, along with a group of supporters from the Pasir Salak Umno Youth division, mobbed Khalid Samad of Parti Amanah Negara as soon as the MP got out of his car at the entrance of the Dewan Rakyat.
The incident was believed to be over Khalid calling Tajuddin “mentri sial (damn minister)” in the Dewan Rakyat earlier.
On Monday, Firdaus and seven others were charged under Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955, which carries a maximum fine of RM100. They pleaded not guilty to the offence.
On Tuesday, Khalid said he submitted an official letter to Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia in the hope that the Dewan Rakyat Speaker would press the Attorney-General’s Chambers for a more severe punishment under Section 124 of the Penal Code.
This section states that anyone who assaults an MP can be punished by up to seven years’ jail and a fine.
Nur Jazlan made his comments to reporters yesterday after attending a leadership convention for the Malaysian Drug Prevention Association’s (Pemadam) clubs in Public Higher Education Institutions at the National Defence University of Malaysia in Sungai Besi.
The convention, attended by 350 students from various public universities nationwide, was aimed at raising awareness on drug abuse.
Nur Jazlan, who is also Pemadam president, said the association’s club membership would be extended to secondary school students this year.
“We have also launched a module on drug prevention and anti-drug awareness in conjunction with the convention,” he said.
