KUALA LUMPUR: Tan Sri Muhammad Shahrul Ikram Yaakob has been appointed as Malaysia's ambassador to the United States (US), replacing Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz whose term of office ended on Feb 8.

According to Sultan Ibrahim's official Facebook page, Shahrul's appointment letter took place at the Istana Negara today.

The ceremony was also attended by Deputy Foreign Minister Mohamad Alamin and Foreign Ministry Secretary-General Amran Mohamed Zin.

Shahrul, who hails from Pahang, graduated with a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Ecology from the University of Malaya and also attended the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School, USA.



He began his career as an administrative and diplomatic officer at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1988 and served as the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 6 January 2019 to 31 May 2022.

Throughout his 35 years of service, Shahrul was commissioned as Malaysia's ambassador to Qatar, Austria and Malaysia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York.

While serving at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he was appointed as deputy secretary-general for bilateral relations, director-general of the ASEAN-Malaysia national secretariat (during the 2015 ASEAN-Malaysia Chairmanship) and secretary of the multilateral political division.

His other previous diplomatic assignments include the Malaysian mission in Vienna, Austria; Washington DC, US, and Beijing, China.
