Uni student served 2 months' jail, RM1,500 fine for stealing 3 pair of designer glasses

SEREMBAN: A private university student here was sentenced to two months’ jail and fined RM1,500 by the magistrate’s court here today for stealing three pair of branded glasses in Senawang last week.
Mohd Shahid Zahidi, 26, pleaded guilty when the charge was read out by a translator in front of Magistrate V Vanita.
The accused with two accomplices, who are still at large, stole three branded glasses from an optical outlet at a shopping centre in Senawang at 9.10am on June 15.
He was charged under Section 380 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum ten years’ imprisonment and a fine if convicted.
Deputy public prosecutor Soo Kok Weng prosecuted, while Shahid’s was represented by S Kartikeyan.

Kartikeyan requested for a minimal sentence, citing this was his client first offence, adding that the accused need to attend his convocation next month.
However, Soo pleaded for a punishment that fit the offence to serve as a lesson.
According to the facts of the case, when the complainant was working at the outlet, three men showed interest in purchasing glasses and had asked various of questions.
Soon after, the men walked away and fled the outlet.
The complainant who sensed something was amiss immediately inspected the display case and found three pair of glasses missing. The complainant then gave the three a chase until the shopping centre entrance and managed to take down the vehicle registration number they were in. © New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd
