Five Malaysian National Defence University (UPNM) students have pleaded not guilty to murdering a fellow navy cadet officer.



KUALA LUMPUR: Five Malaysian National Defence University (UPNM) students have pleaded not guilty at the High Court to murdering a fellow navy cadet officer.
The five – Muhammad Akmal Zuhairi Azmal, Muhammad Azamuddin Mad Sofi, Muhammad Najib Mohd Razi, Muhammad Afif Najmudin Azahat and Mohamad Shobirin Sabri – were jointly charged with murdering Zulfarhan Osman Zulkarnain, 21, under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the mandatory death penalty.
Another student, Abdoul Hakeem Mohd Ali, also pleaded not guilty to abetting the five in murdering Zulfarhan Osman, under Section 109 read together with Section 302 of the same Code.
This is the first time their plea was recorded at the High Court after the charges were read out before Justice Azman Abdullah.
The court fixed next Monday (Nov 13) for mention.
Lawyers Mohd Fadly Hashim, Nurul Syuhada Abdullah, Zamri Idrus, and Joshua Tay appeared for the accused persons.
Zulfarhan, a final year electrical engineering student, was rushed to Serdang Hospital with burn marks and bruises at around 8pm on June 1, but succumbed to his injuries about two hours later.
In early June, 36 university students were arrested in connection with Zulfarhan's death.
