SUNGAI PETANI: Police arrested a 36-year-old man for allegedly battering his wife and forcing her and their three daughters to beg for money in Taman Ria here.
The man was picked up at 1.30am on Sunday following a public report on the beating to the Crisis Relief Squad of MCA (CRSM) at 10.30pm on Saturday.
Kuala Muda district police chief Assistant Commissioner Md Zukir Md Isa said initial investigation revealed that the man assaulted his 29-year-old wife after accusing her of having an affair, and again when she failed to get enough money when begging.
The family had earlier been living with the victim's mother in Taman Ria.
On Jan 29, the man left the house with his wife and children on the pretext that they were going to Penang.
(But the family actually went to live) on the streets, where the man forced his wife and daughters to beg for money," he said in a statement.
The woman and her three children, aged between 5 and 7, have returned to their family, he added.
Zukir said police are investigating the case under Section 323 of the Penal Code and Section 18 of the Domestic Violence Act 1994.
The man could face up to a year in jail, or a maximum RM2,000 fine, or both.
