KUALA LUMPUR: A surprise wedding anniversary celebration arranged by a man for his wife ended in a tragedy when the couple were among eight people injured in an explosion which occurred at an entertainment outlet in Puchong on Tuesday.

S. Jaiseelan and wife, Bavani, both 32, have been admitted to a private hospital for treatment.

Jaiseelan's younger brother, S.Kavilan, said his brother had been admitted to the High Dependency Unit of the hospital for serious injuries on the neck and leg, while Bavani, who fractured her wrist, would undergo surgery later today.

"I was actually with them for their wedding anniversary celebration, but left early, about thirty minutes before the explosion.

"My brother wanted to surprise his wife with the wedding anniversary celebration and chose this pub because Bavani had been wanting to come here for a long time. So last night was the first time the couple was here," he told Bernama when met at the scene.

The explosion, believed to have been caused by a hand grenade, occurred at about 2.15am while the patrons were watching a Euro 2016 match.

The eight people injured in the incident included a woman of Chinese nationality.

Kavilan, 27, said Jaiseelan, who is a personal driver, underwent an angiogram recently and was supposed to see his doctor today for follow-up treatment.

Another victim, but who declined to be identified, said he was at the premises with four friends and two of them sustained minor injuries in the explosion.

"The explosion made me deaf for a few hours," he added.

His car, which was parked about 3O metres from the premises, was also damaged with the windscreen of the driver's seat smashed.

Meanwhile, Selangor deputy police chief Datuk Abdul Rahim Jaafar, when met by reporters, said the explosion was not an act of terror.

"We will investigate the incident from all aspects, whether it was fuelled by business rivalry, vengeance or if the suspect was targeting specific individuals there," he added.

He said the case was being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder. - Bernama
