KOTA KINABALU: A toddler was lucky to escape death when she fell one floor down at the 1Borneo Hypermall not far from the state capital here.
The 18-month old girl was believed to be playing near the escalator and was holding onto the moving hand rail and was pulled up above the safety barrier before falling at about 2pm Sunday.
She was reported to have passed out after the fall.
A statement from the 1Borneo Hypermall said that the girl who was unsupervised at that time was immediately taken to a clinic by the mall staff and subsequently sent to the Likas Women and Children Hospital.
Kota Kinabalu city police chief Assist Comm M. Chandra said the toddler sustained bruises on her face and is reported to be in stable condition.
"Her eyes, nose and mouth are swollen from the fall but she is in stable condition and is able to cry," he said.
"She was also taken for x-ray scanning but the results are still not ready," he added.
It is not clear where her parents were or what they were doing prior to the incident.
