BN to use its own symbol in GE16, MyPPP is part of "Friends of BN" Only - Zahid Hamidi

BN to use its own symbol in GE16 - Ahmad Zahid

30/06/2024

MARAN: Barisan Nasional (BN) will use its own symbol in the 16th General Election (GE16) despite entering into political cooperation with Pakatan Harapan (PH).

AI Summary

Barisan Nasional (BN) will continue to use its own symbol in the 16th General Election (GE16) despite political cooperation with Pakatan Harapan (PH). PH will use their own symbol, and BN will use the BN symbol.

BN and PH will make sure not to contest in the same area, avoiding a clash between the two parties in GE16. BN will only contest in areas not contested by PH and vice versa.

BN only has four main component parties, namely UMNO, MIC, MCA, and Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah. The People's Progressive Party (MyPPP) is part of 'Friends of BN' and is not an official component. The decision to accept any new party in BN requires 100 percent consensus.

BN chairman, Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said, BN's failure in the last election did not prevent the party from continuing to use the symbol in question.

"PH competes with their (PH) symbol, we (in turn) compete with our symbol, but in terms of cooperation we (still) work together," he said.

He said this when officiating the Maran Division UMNO meeting at the Maran Division UMNO Hall, Pekan Tajau here on Sunday.

Also present was the UMNO Head of Maran Division, Datuk Shahaniza Shamsuddin.

Ahmad Zahid also explained that BN will not contest in areas contested by the PH party.

"As long as the area we (BN) are competing in is not contested by them (PH) and we will not compete in the area they (PH) are competing in," he explained.

Responding to the latest status of the People's Progressive Party (myPPP), Ahmad Zahid said there are 11 parties in the coalition including MyPPP as 'friends of BN'.

The reason is that BN only has four component parties consisting of UMNO, MIC, MCA and Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah.

"We are all equal... they (MyPPP) are part of Friends of BN, not a component (party).

"In the BN Constitution, it states that the decision to accept any party must be 100 percent 'consensus'... if any party does not agree, then we will not accept," he said

KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) temporarily suspended the license of the tour company involved in the incident of a bus carrying Chinese tourists overturned at Kilometer 16.5 of Jalan Genting Highlands on Saturday.

Summary of AI

MOTAC temporarily suspended the license of the tour company involved in the overturned bus incident on Jalan Genting Highlands, which claimed two lives.

A thorough investigation is underway, including a special meeting with the Ministry of Transport and JPJ on July 2, to determine next steps.

Bus drivers have been remanded, and tour companies may lose their licenses if found guilty, with an emphasis on tourist safety and SOP compliance.

Its minister, Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, said the operating license was temporarily suspended until a comprehensive investigation into the incident that claimed two lives was completed.

According to him, a special meeting involving his ministry together with the Ministry of Transport and the Road Transport Department (JPJ) will be held on July 2 for that purpose.

"I have asked for a full investigation to be carried out in terms of the travel company which is understood to have appointed a third party.

"I also received complaints from tourists about the buses provided being unsuitable for use when the buses were changed three times during the six days and five nights of the holiday.

"This proves that the bus is not well maintained, it has problems with no air conditioning and noise," he said after visiting the eight victims who were treated at Kuala Lumpur Hospital on Sunday.

All the victims who received treatment are in a stable condition and are undergoing further examination until they are allowed to leave.

Also present, the Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia, Ouyang Yujing.

He said that his side apologized following the incident and did not hesitate to withdraw the tourism company's license if found guilty.

He said, so far the bus driver has been remanded to help the investigation.

"The safety of tourists is our priority because the ministry often reminds tourism companies to cooperate in doing the necessary steps for that purpose.

"Don't take the lives of tourists for granted just to make a profit in business," he said.

At the same time, he said, JPJ was urged to enforce strict monitoring of compliance with the standard operating procedures (SOP) of tourist bus services to avoid similar incidents.

Meanwhile, Bentong District Police Chief, Superintendent Zaiham Mohd Kahar informed that the 32-year-old bus driver was remanded for four days from Sunday to assist in the investigation.

On Saturday, Sinar Harian reported that the bus carrying 21 passengers consisting of 18 Chinese tourists and three locals including the bus driver, assistant and tour guide overturned.

The bus involved crashed into the middle wall of the road divider before overturning.

As a result of the incident, two Chinese passengers, Wang Shuhong, 49, and Zhang Ping, 58, were confirmed dead at the scene while 13 others were injured.

Eight victims received treatment at HKL and the remaining received treatment at Bentong Hospital.

Shopper ‘escapes death’ when escalator malfunctions at KL’s Mid Valley Megamall

The Straits Time

SINGAPORE – A malfunction caused some parts of an escalator to “pop out” at Kuala Lumpur’s Mid Valley Megamall on June 28, according to a social media post.

The post on Xiaohongshu titled “Midvalley KL escape from death” was uploaded at 4.13pm on June 28.

According to the post’s caption, which is written in Chinese, the user had taken the escalator at the shopping mall earlier that day.

As the post’s author stepped onto the escalator, there was a sudden, loud noise, and some parts “popped out” of the top of the escalator, the caption said.

The social media user, together with other shoppers, then ran down the escalator, it added.

No one was injured, according to the caption.

The user, who still feels afraid thinking back on the incident, reminded others to stay alert while riding escalators and not to listen to loud music so they can react quickly if something were to happen.

The post, which had about 2,500 likes as at 9pm on June 28, includes four photos of the aftermath of the incident. A step appears to have come off at the top of the escalator.

It is unclear what caused the malfunction.

The Straits Times has contacted Mid Valley Megamall for more information.

In May 2023, a fire broke out at the mall, forcing its operators to shut the shopping centre for a day. The fire was believed to have been caused by overheating of oil that is used to cool an electrical transformer at the mall’s main power substation, a fire department official told reporters.

The management of Mid Valley Megamall has launched investigations after a shopper yesterday claimed that parts of an escalator at the mall malfunctioned and “popped out”.

IGB Real Estate Investment Trust apologised over the incident and stressed it would ensure all precautionary measures were implemented to resolve the matter as soon as possible to prevent future occurrences.

It said it would work closely with the occupational health and safety department and their maintenance operator, Toshiba Elevator (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, to identify the cause of the malfunction.

“We are relieved there were no injuries and will continue to advise all mall patrons to exercise caution when using the escalators,” it said in a statement.

The Ministry of Health will release the revised SOP details for COVID-19 in the near future

29/06/2024

VALUE: The Ministry of Health (KKM) will release details of the revised standard operating procedures (SOP) related to COVID-19 in the near future following the country's transition to the phase of living with the pandemic.

Summary of AI

Revision of SOP COVID-19: The Ministry of Health (KKM) will release details of the revision of standard operating procedures (SOP) related to COVID-19. This SOP involves three things: the surveillance and observation order (HSO), the wearing of face masks, and the declaration of local areas of infection.

Transition to Living With the Virus: The Ministry of Health decided that Malaysians are now in the phase of living with the COVID-19 virus. This view considers COVID-19 like any other virus, and countries trying to move out of the endemic transition to living with the virus.

Healthy Eating and the War on Sugar: The Malaysian Nutrition Month Program aims to change mindsets and raise awareness about healthy eating. The prevalence of obesity and overweight in the country is increasing, and more than half of adults are at risk of developing non-communicable diseases (NCDs) due to obesity.

Its minister, Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad, said it included three things, namely the surveillance and observation order (HSO), the wearing of face masks and the declaration of local areas of infection.

He said the Cabinet had agreed on the revision of the SOP for COVID-19 and the Director General of Health was expected to announce the matter on a date to be set later.

"The details (SOP) are technical. For example, previously the HSO was at home for five days (positive for COVID-19) and had to update the symptoms in MySejahtera. When the (SOP) is reviewed later, it may change. We are waiting for details from the chief director later.

"In that way, it is an era where we start treating COVID-19 like any other virus. We used to move from a pandemic to an endemic transition. Now we want to get out of an endemic transition to living with a virus," he said.

He told reporters after inaugurating the Ministry of Health Malaysian Nutrition Month 2024 with the theme 'Change Minds, Prevent Nutrition-Related Diseases' here today.

Dzulkefly was previously reported as saying that the Ministry of Health has decided that Malaysians are now in the phase of living with the COVID-19 virus and towards continuing life as usual.

Regarding today's program, he said it aims to change minds and increase community awareness about the importance of practicing healthy eating to prevent non-communicable diseases (NCD) related to nutrition.

He said this is because the current prevalence of NCDs in the country is very worrying with the results of the National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS) 2023 showing the prevalence of obesity and overweight increased to 54.5 percent last year compared to 50.1 percent in 2019.

"Consistently for the past decade, for every two Malaysian adults, one is overweight while one in six adults has diabetes, showing that more than half of adults are at risk of getting NCDs due to uncontrolled obesity," he said.

Dzulkefly said the Ministry of Health is also drafting a Strategic Plan for Reducing Sugar Among Malaysians (2024-2030) to ensure that more aggressive and targeted activities can be implemented in an integrated manner at various levels.

"It is to deal with excessive sugar consumption through the planning of the War Against Sugar initiative that will be launched in the near future," he said.

Therefore, he called on the representatives of the people to jointly make the War on Sugar one of the activities or programs that need to be carried out in their respective areas in line with the nationwide approach.

A roof collapsed under heavy rainfall and winds at the main airport in India's capital New Delhi on Friday, killing one person and leading to the cancellation of flights from a domestic terminal, officials said.

A portion of the canopy at the departure area of Delhi airport's Terminal 1 collapsed early in the morning and flight operations were shut down until 2 p.m. (0830 GMT), India's aviation minister told reporters.

The entire terminal, one of three at the country's busiest airport, has been evacuated and an inquiry ordered into the collapse, said the minister, Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu.

At least 10 flights were cancelled and 40 were delayed, according to data from flight tracking platform Flightradar24.

Eight injured people were taken to hospital and the rescue operation had been completed, said Atul Garg, the director of Delhi Fire Service.

Visuals from Indian TV channels showed a taxi crushed under a wrecked metal pillar at the entrance area of the terminal, which is mostly used by low-cost carriers IndiGo and SpiceJet SPJT.BO for domestic flights.

Indigo is operated by Interglobe Aviation INGL.NS.

The incident happened at 5 a.m. (2330 GMT Thursday), usually a busy time for domestic flights carrying people across the country, a statement from the airport posted on X said.

The airport area received about 148.5 millimetres of rain over three hours in the early morning, more than the average for all of June, according to India's weather office.

Many other parts of Delhi were flooded as well and cars trapped in thigh-deep water. Metro services were affected and traffic snarls were reported from several parts of the city.

Several residents in Delhi also complained of power cuts.

In India's most populous state of Uttar Pradesh, at least 20 people died in various rain and flood-related incidents in the last 48 hours, including seven due to lightning strikes, officials said.

GMR Airports Infrastructure GMRI.NS, which operates Delhi International Airport, is also its top shareholder with a 64% stake. Its shares fell as much as 2.1% in early trade.

In a Parliamentary written reply, the MoF stated that 2.93 million members have withdrawn RM6.98 billion from the Flexible Account, with an average withdrawal of RM2,382.

The MoF was responding to an enquiry from Datuk Seri Sh Mohmed Puzi Sh Ali (BN-Pekan) about the current statistics on withdrawals made by EPF members under the account restructuring scheme.

KUALA LUMPUR: Police are hunting for an individual believed to be the suspect who delivered a fake bomb package to the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) in Putrajaya on June 5.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa said a sketch of the man wearing a face mask was captured at the office of a delivery company in Sungai Buloh, Selangor, on the same day the package was sent to MOTAC.

He urged anyone who has seen the man, who was wearing a red shirt, jacket, and black head covering, to come forward to assist the police.

"Investigations show that the suspect carried out the package delivery process using another person's identity.

"The individual whose identity was used has confirmed that he did not go to the delivery office in Sungai Buloh and is unaware of any delivery transactions," he told a press conference at the Brickfields district police headquarters here today.

Information about the incident can be conveyed to the Putrajaya district police headquarters or the Kuala Lumpur Police hotline at 03-21159999.

On another matter, Rusdi said police have identified four locations in the capital city being used as prostitution dens offering cheap sexual services to customers.

"Kuala Lumpur police vow to eradicate places and activities of prostitution. I do not want to see street prostitution attracting people to stop by the roadside just to look at them.

"Police will take continuous action not only at those locations but also at other identified spots," he said.

He said 409 raids were conducted to combat prostitution activities in six districts here from January to June 23 this year.

From these operations, 1,691 individuals from various countries were arrested on suspicion of engaging in prostitution activities.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 27 (Bernama) -- The United States (US) on Wednesday handed over three CN-235s aircraft, which have been converted into maritime surveillance aircraft (MSA), to the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF).

The handover marked the completion of the conversion programme.

The US Embassy in Malaysia in a statement said US Ambassador to Malaysia Edgard D. Kagan and RMAF Chief Tan Sri Mohd Asghar Khan Goriman Khan attended the ceremony at the Subang Air
Force Base.

“With all three aircraft converted and incorporated into Malaysia’s overall maritime domain awareness architecture, we know that Malaysia is better able to maintain vigilant watch over activities
within its Exclusive Economic Zones, and better postured to secure the maritime environment,” Kagan said.

The statement said the conversion programme, which began in 2018 and totalled approximately US$60 million under the Maritime Security Initiative, served as the first major US security grant programme in Malaysia.

According to the embassy, the CN-235s are now enhanced with maritime surveillance radars, electro-optical infrared turrets, beyond line-of-sight communications and roll-on/roll-off system
operator stations.

The aircraft are attached to Squadron 1 at Kuching Airbase in Sarawak, it added.

The statement confirmed that the US provided more than US$240 million in total security assistance from 2019 to 2023.

The US-Malaysia security cooperation includes eleven bilateral and five multilateral defence exercises –the most Malaysia has with any
country – which enhance Malaysian defence readiness, strengthen multinational relationships, and demonstrate US resolve to support
a free and open Indo-Pacific.
