Former houseman fined for insulting King, PM on Facebook

KUALA LUMPUR: A former medical houseman was fined RM10,000 after he pleaded guilty to insulting the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong and the Prime Minister in a Facebook comment.

Mohd Shariman Shahrir Omar, 39, admitted to posting the comment with the intention to annoy others at 11.42pm on Oct 11 last year.

DPP Mohd Sophian Zakaria told the court that the accused had used insulting words to describe the Ruler.

He asked the Sessions Court to mete out a heavy sentence as the accused had committed a serious offence.

“However, due to work pressure during his housemanship, he was unable to continue his service,” Adlizan told Judge Zaman Mohd Noor on Thursday.

At the same court, a lorry driver supervisor claimed trial to a similar charge.

Muhammad Amirul Helmy Hisham, 23, pleaded not guilty to insulting the Prime Minister in a Facebook post at 10.23am on Nov 18, last year.

The court fixed bail at RM4,000 with one surety. The case is set for mention on Feb 12.
