KOTA KINABALU: The two live crocodiles captured by wildlife officials in Sabah earlier this week will not be auctioned off on Monday (Aug 6) as planned, but will be euthanised instead.

Sabah Wildlife Department public relations officer Siti Nur’ain Ampuan Acheh said it was not possible to proceed with the auction due to last minute technical problems.

She added that it was also not possible to release the reptiles to the wild in a new area.

"Crocodiles are a territorial species and releasing them into a new area will cause conflict with the resident population.

The first crocodile, a female measuring more than 2.5m long, was captured in Kampung Anak Kinarut on July 26 after reports were received from the public.

Three days later, a 3.3m male croc was caught in a river near the Kelly Bay Resort in Tuaran.

They were kept at the Potuki Rescue Centre for health checks.

Siti Nur’ain said the reptiles’ presence had been monitored for quite some time and wildlife rangers had been planning to trap them to ensure public safety.
