GEORGE TOWN: Police have detained six people, including two secondary school students, to assist investigations into the alleged rape of a 27-year-old mentally challenged woman here last week.

Southwest district police chief Superintendent A. A. Anbalagan said the arrests were made following a police report lodged by the victim’s younger sister.

He said the sister, 23, suspected something was amiss when the victim was not at home at about 12.30am on Aug 4.

“The younger sister, her husband and her brother went out searching for the victim.

“They found her with several men in a forest at Kampung Padang in Bayan Lepas here. When the men saw the trio approaching, they fled.

“The younger sister asked the victim what she was doing with the men and the victim initially said they were just having a stroll.

“But the victim later told her younger sister that she was raped by the some of the men,” he said.

Anbalagan said the younger sister decided to lodge a police report at 5.44am the same day.

He said police launched an investigation and detained the six males, aged between 14 and 23, in separate locations across the state.

“Apart from the Form Four and Form Five students, three are school dropouts and the sixth person is unemployed.

“One of the dropouts has a previous criminal record,” he added.

The case is being investigated under Section 376 of the Penal Code. © New Straits Times Press
