PETALING JAYA: Twitter users had brickbats and bouquets for Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman today after he was captured in a widely-shared video picking up rubbish left behind by football supporters at Bukit Jalil stadium on Saturday night.

Syed Saddiq’s action came a day after Japan’s football team at the World Cup finals in Russia won praise for leaving their changing room spotless after being defeated by Belgium for a spot in the semi-finals. Japan’s supporters were also praised for picking up rubbish left on the terraces.

Bloggers and other social media users praised the young minister for setting a good example for Malaysia’s youth.

Twitter user Mobeen Dar @MobeenDarKhan said: “Seeing YB Syed Saddiq cleaning the stand in the stadium after the Malaysian FA Cup Final last night just amazes me… This is how a minister should be… A perfect example for us to follow…”

Twitter user zinnirah @thematahary_ said: “Nice one Syed Saddiq. Contoh yang baik bagi belia. Dia menunjuk ke memang betul-betul buat ke, selagi benda tu baik it’s fine. Ini salah satu cara mendidik belia dengan sikap yang baik.” (Nice one Syed Saddiq. Good example for the youths. Whether he is showing off or sincere, as long as it is good, it’s fine. This is one way to educate our youths to have a good attitude.)

Syed Saddiq himself said on Twitter that he did not like to see people indiscriminately leaving rubbish behind.

“I will even pick up a friend’s cigarette butt,” he said, explaining that yesterday’s action was not a solitary event.
