KUALA LUMPUR: Police have detained a 24-year-old driver, who was involved in a fatal hit-and-run road accident that claimed the lives of a married couple at the Jalan Kepong and Jalan Jinjang Permai traffic light junction yesterday morning.

City police Traffic Enforcement Investigation Department chief Assistant Commissioner Zulkefly Yahya said the man was arrested when he made a police report over the incident at Jalan Tun H.S. Lee police station at 11.30pm yesterday.

Zulkefly said the man was brought back to the scene and was taken to Kuala Lumpur Hospital for a blood test. “Before the arrest, through closed-circuit television (CCTV) recording at the scene, police managed to trace the four-wheel drive registration number and had gone to the owner’ house, but no one was at home.

“Hence, when he came to lodge a police report, we detained him to facilitate investigation.

“If he cooperates with us, he will be released on police bail today.

However if he refuses to work with us, we will obtain a remand order against him,” he said.

In the 6.50am incident yesterday, Quah Yew Tiong and Wong Lili Han Ju Shan, both 38, were riding on a motorcycle when they were rear-ended by a car.

The driver was reported to have abandoned his car and fled the scene on foot, based on the CCTV recording. The victims succumbed to severe head injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving. © New Straits Times Press
