KUALA LUMPUR: A 14-year-old boy, who "borrowed" his brother's motorcycle for a joyride, was among 16 motorcyclists nabbed in two separate operations against illegal street racing, here, last night.

He was riding the Modenas Pulsar RS200 along Jalan Raja Laut in the city when he stumbled on a police roadblock.

Panicked, the boy made a U-turn and almost hit a policeman on duty in his escape bid. He was later apprehended after a short chase.

"I was scared (upon seeing the police) because I don't have a licence. Also my brother only allowed me to ride the bike as long as it is near our house in Sungai Buloh, "He didn't know that I took it all the way to KL," he said.

The boy added that he had been riding since he was 11 and had been slapped twice with summonses for various traffic offences.

City police's Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department (Intelligence/Operation) chief Assistant Superintendent Ahmad Fuad Mahmod said the boy was among 16 motorcyclists, aged between 14 and 25, who were arrested last night in the operation dubbed Ops Samseng Jalanan. The operation was held along Jalan Raja Laut and DUKE Highway.

“At Jalan Raja Laut, one of the motorcyclists was injured while trying to escape the roadblock. “11 of them were detained in first operation held from 10.30pm to midnight, 22 summonses were issued for various offences. Among them were performing dangerous stunts and taking part in illegal race,” he told reporters.

Fuad said another five motorcyclists, aged between 20 and 23, were arrested in the operation along DUKE Highway from 1am to 3am. He said five summonses have been issued, for offences such as dangerous driving, illegal modification and use of non-standard registration number plates.
