PETALING JAYA: The new government stumbled upon reams of shredded documents and computers that were locked out when it moved into Putrajaya after GE14, says Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
The Prime Minister told the New York Times (NYT) that in his first visit to his office after his inauguration was shocking – he walked into an office filled with garbage bags stuffed with shredded documents and half-consumed food abandoned in a sign that former occupants had left in a hurry.
The Finance Ministry office down the street was no better, the US daily reported, saying that its minister Lim Guan Eng found computers that had locked out even the highest-ranking bureaucrats.
In some cases, vital files were only accessible to one person – former prime minister Najib Razak, who was also the finance minister
Within two weeks of taking office, they consolidated accounts and numbers from various departments and found that the national debt is above RM1 trillion, the premier claimed.
Now into their second month, the new administration is continuing to piece the puzzle together, an exercise that Lim has described as a "nightmare".
"The more we look into the previous administration, the more bad things we find," Dr Mahathir alleged.
"Any organisation that had money, the previous government found the means to take the money.
"All (government-funded initiatives) have been raped by the previous government ... They have taken money. Now they have lost the money," he said.
NYT also said that Lim is feeling overwhelmed by his discovery of the extent of pilferage and mismanagement that took place.
"I'm having nightmares practically every day, wondering what landmines I will tread on the following day," he said.
