KUALA LUMPUR: Several family members of detainees at the Sungai Buloh Prison have lodged police reports against government religious officer Zamihan Mat Zin over a speech in which he made lewd remarks on Pakatan Harapan (PH) leaders and attacked the coalition’s manifesto.

Zamihan, an officer of the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim), has been seconded to the home ministry to conduct rehabilitation programmes for suspects detained under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma).

In their reports, they said Zamihan during a programme on May 31 at the Sungai Buloh Prison, condemned PH leaders as hypocrites and passed lewd remarks at Defence Minister Mohamad Sabu and Permatang Pauh MP Nurul Izzah Anwar.

Giving an example, they said Zamihan was explaining how the insertion of an object into the anus, such as during an anoscopy procedure, would not nullify one’s Ramadan fast.

“But you will see Mat Sabu and Nurul Izzah inside the anus,” said the report quoting a line allegedly uttered by Zamihan.

“These hypocrite leaders have not fulfilled their manifesto, and broke their promise to bring down petrol prices. The present national leaders are no different from those previously,” he was quoted as saying in the police report.

Zamihan in his speech had also questioned Anwar Ibrahim, accusing the PKR de facto leader of quoting verses from the Quran to fulfil his “liberal” agenda.

The police reports against Zamihan, lodged on Saturday at the Setapak police station, also said Zamihan had told detainees not to waste time appointing lawyers to defend themselves.

He said detainees should just plead guilty because they were terrorists, and also told them that Sosma would not be repealed.

A lawyer for the five Sosma detainees, Faizal Rahman, said police should act quickly to investigate Zamihan.

Faizal also urged that Zamihan be barred from interacting with Sosma detainees, including during a prison event planned for the coming Hari Raya.

He said families of the five detainees would be called to the Sungai Buloh district police headquarters to have their statements taken.

Zamihan, who leads an association called Pertubuhan Ahli Sunnah Wal Jamaah (Aswaja), courted controversy last year when he criticised the Johor Sultan’s stand opposing a laundrette’s Muslim-only policy.

The preacher also uttered derogatory remarks on Chinese Malaysians. He was arrested and investigated for sedition.

The Selangor ruler, who cancelled Zamihan’s credentials to lecture on Islam, called him a racist while the Johor sultan dismissed him as an “empty tin”.

Zamihan apologised to the two sultans but threatened to sue FMT, claiming he had been misquoted.
