He is now en route to Istana Negara where he will have an audience with the king.

KUALA LUMPUR: Anwar Ibrahim has walked out a free man, exactly 1,557 days since he was sentenced to jail on a charge of sodomy.

But unlike his previous release from prison in 2003, Anwar today walks out amid intense attention from the mainstream media, just days after the historic win in the May 9 polls by Pakatan Harapan, an alliance between his partners in the former opposition and his mentor-turned-nemesis-turned-ally, Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Anwar, dressed in full suit with a maroon tie, was greeted by a large crowd who include reporters who had waited outside the Cheras Rehabilitation Hospital, where he had been undergoing treatment.

He will now be joined by his wife, Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and Selangor Menteri Besar Mohamed Azmin Ali, to have an audience with Agong at the Istana Negara in Jalan Duta.

Also awaiting him at the palace is Mahathir.
KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has arrived at the Istana Negara to meet the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V.

Anwar made his way here after being released from Cheras Rehabilitation Hospital at 11.30am Wednesday (May 16).
He arrived at the palace at around noon, and among the first people to greet him there was Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, reported Bernama.
Anwar went in through Gate 1 but media personnel were not allowed to linger there and were gathered at Gate 2.
Earlier, Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad arrived at Istana Negara for the Royal Pardons Board meeting, reported Bernama.
The board was to deliberate on the release of the PKR de facto leader.
Last Friday (May 11), Dr Mahathir said the Sultan Muhammad V had expressed his willingness to grant a full and immediate pardon to Anwar.
The Royal Pardons Board meeting was supposed to be held on Tuesday (May15) but it was postpone to Wednesday.
In 2015, Anwar was sentenced to five years' jail after the Federal Court upheld his guilty verdict for sodomy.
Anwar was initially scheduled to be released on June 10, 2018, after his five-year sentence that started on Feb 10, 2015 was reduced for good behaviour.
