KUALA LUMPUR: The government has ordered an immediate investigation into the accusation by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad that there is a possibility that the plane he boarded to Langkawi was sabotaged. Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said the Department of Civil Aviation has been ordered to investigate the matter.

“This is a serious accusation, we take it seriously. “At the same time, we hope this is also not a political stunt. “We want to investigate if this is real or merely a political exploitation,” he said.

Liow said the captain and owner of the private jet would also be called up to give their statements. “This is a serious matter regarding aviation safety and we do not want anyone to have any doubts on our standards and compliance.” Liow said. He added that so far, no report has been made by the pilot.

Sinar Harian reported yesterday that the Pakatan Harapan chairman had claimed that before take-off, the pilot had announced that the plane had been damaged and repairs could not be done. Dr Mahathir said he later had to asked a friend to lend a plane to get to Langkawi in order to attend a function and prepare for Nomination Day today. © New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd
