Older brother of 'Datuk Kabi' jailed for cheating

KUALA LUMPUR: The older brother of "Datuk Kabi" has been found guilty of cheating.
Datuk C. Anand Raja, 44, was sentenced to four years in jail by a Sessions Court here with cheating a retiree over a car hire purchase loan.
Anand Raja's brother is "Datuk Kabi" or C. Kamaleshwaran, who has been in the news for various cheating cases.
Anand Raja pleaded guilty to deceiving Mohd Yusof Abdul Manan, 60, by misleading the victim into believing that he could settle Mohd Yusof's car loan.
The offence was committed at a Public Bank branch in Kajang at 10.40am on Aug 10, 2016.
The accused was charged under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which carries imprisonment of between one and 10 years, whipping, or a fine.
Anand Raja, who was a former lawyer, mitigated for himself for a lenient sentence.
"My guilty plea has saved the court's time. I am the sole breadwinner in my family and I have two children and parents to care for," he said Monday (March 19).
The prosecutor, DPP Nurul Khairiyah Samsudin, however, asked the court to mete out a deterrent punishment as the accused had committed a serious offence.
Anand Raja is currently serving a three-year jail sentence at the Sungai Buloh prison for a similar cheating offence.
On top of the four years' jail sentence, Sessions Court judge Habibah Mohamed Yusof also fined him RM3,000 in default of three months jail.
In November last year, Bernama reported that "Datuk Kabi" was charged with 27 counts of cheating several individuals, allegedly offering discounts on Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) bill payments involving losses amounting to almost RM2mil.
