PETALING JAYA: Netizens are praying for the safety of the staff and patients at Hospital Kuala Lumpur as news of a fire in the building went viral on social media.

Photos and videos of the incident posted on social media show medical staff evacuating patients from the hospital building as a fire alarm blares in the background.

Nurses and doctors urgently wheel out patients – some bedridden and some in wheelchairs – to the hospital parking lot.

Other nurses and doctors are seen tending to the patients in shaded lots, with some using a breathing bag on bedridden patients.

In another video, a nurse is seen fainting as she rushes out of the building.

Concerned netizens shared messages of support to those affected by the fire, advising them to stay strong.

"Can't imagine how was (sic) everyone doing trying to evacuated the big HKL, stay safe," Jim said on Twitter.

"I hope the patients were safely evacuated and HKL staff stay safe," said Niza Azman on Facebook.

Emeeril Syazwan, along with many others, said they would pray for their safety.

The fire that broke out at a storeroom in Hospital Kuala Lumpur on Saturday afternoon has since been extinguished and medical services are operating as usual, said hospital director Dr Nor Akma Yusuf.

In a statement, she said the storeroom, which caught fire at around 12.15pm on Saturday, is located at the hospital's National Institute of Forensic Medicine (IPFN) building.

She added that no casualties nor injuries had been reported in the incident.
