KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Jamal Md Yunos was arrested today over threats he allegedly made against DAP member Datuk Zaid Ibrahim several days ago.

The Sungai Besar Umno division chief was arrested at the Putra World Trade Centre about 8pm.

He was brought in an unmarked police car to the Dang Wangi police headquarters.

Dang Wangi police chief Assistant Commissioner Shaharuddin Abdullah confirmed the arrest, adding that police from the city headquarters would carry out the investigation.

He said Jamal will be investigated under Section 504 of the Penal Code for intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of the peace and Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955 for insulting behaviour.

Jamal had allegedly threatened to smash Zaid’s head with a sledgehammer in response to the latter’s tweet following an interview in which Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah had criticised Parti Pribumi Bersatu malaysia chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Zaid had tweeted that the Sultan “should be careful with his words” as no one is immune “when the country burns”..

On Wednesday, Jamal had questioned the police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission for being slow in taking action against Zaid.

The Red Shirts faction leader, who wielded a sledgehammer at the PWTC, was reported to have said he would take the law into his own hands “and hunt him down myself” if police failed to probe Zahid by today.

Zaid was believed to have lodged a police report yesterday.

Jamal’s lawyer, Datuk Mohd Imran Tamrin, questioned the arrest.

“Zaid was being irresponsible and had no respect for the Sultan when he made such remarks trough the tweet. Instead of taking action against him, Datuk Seri Jamal was the one who was arrested. We urge police to also investigate Zaid,” he said.

He added that other than Jamal, police have called three other individuals to surrender themselves.

However, Imran declined to reveal the identities of the other three. © New Straits Times
