KUALA LUMPUR: A motion by Umno Youth for the top two party posts to be uncontested in the party election next year was accepted on Friday.

The motion was put to vote by Umno permanent chairman Tan Sri Badruddin Amiruldin and was passed unanimously by the delegates present at the ongoing Umno General Assembly at the Putra World Trade Centre here.

“In the spirit of winning and wanting to face any challenge through the tradition of championing for the people, the amendment proposed by Umno Youth, which was supported by delegates from Perak and all other states, will be put to vote.

“As such, in line with Clause 20 of the party constitution, the amendment to paragraph five on the motion of the president's policy speech will be approved.

The delegates in Dewan Merdeka stood up and voiced their agreement with the motion.

Najib is party president but the deputy president's post has been vacant since Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin was suspended in February last year

Umno sacked Muhyiddin four months later and vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi was appointed by the Umno supreme council to carry out the duties of acting deputy president.
