Presenting the full line-up of ‘OlaBola The Musical’
OlaBola The Musical is ramping up its production; it revealed most of the cast members at a press conference at Kuala Lumpur on Oct 16.
Among the standout is movie star Iedil Putra, who was last seen in Dain Said’s film Interchange. He will be playing Rahman the sport commentator originally portrayed by Bront Palarae in the 2016 hit film that the musical is based on.
Iedil, 33, said: “It’s a call of duty to play this role. It’s such an inspiring story and to be cast in this production, it is going to be an amazing experience.
“Everyone in the cast is amazing, and they all come from different backgrounds. In that sense, OlaBola is a fitting platform to showcase that unity.”
Tiara Jacquelina, who is making her directorial debut helming the musical, agreed: “The story resonates with every Malaysian, and we want to honour that.
“Our cast is made up of Malay, Indian, Chinese, Sabahan, Sarawakian, people from the stage, from films, YouTuber, from the B-Boy community, Hip-hop artists … from all walks of life, a truly and proudly Malaysia.”
Another well known cast member is Melissa Ong, who will be playing Mei Ling the brother to Tauke.
On Oct 7, six of the key cast members were named: they are actors Muhd Luqman Hafidz and Lim Jian Wen (reprising their roles as Ahmad Ali and Ong Tiam Cai from the 2016 film) , Brian Chan (as Chow Kwok Keong aka Tauke), Abimanyu Masilamani (Muthu Kumar), Kai Chalmers (Eric Yong) and rapper Altimet, (Drill Sergeant Ahmad).

Tiara Jacquelina (centre) is proud that the cast of OlaBola The Musical is made of people from different backgrounds.
In August the production company Enfiniti had an open casting call where over 300 talents auditioned.
“After three days of auditioning and casting calls we found 40 amazing talents in Malaysia today. And we promise, OlaBola The Musical is going to be a brand new immersive theatrical performance where the Panggung Sari (Istana Budaya) will be transformed into Stadium Negara in 1980,” added Tiara.
OlaBola tells the story of the country’s national football team, Harimau Malaya, and its journey to qualify for the 1980 Summer Olympics. The film was directed by Chiu Keng Guan and earned RM16.67mil at the box office last year.
OlaBola The Musical will have the same storyline, however it will be the songs that drive the story. The musical will feature about 20 songs, said Tiara.
Rehearsals for the musical begins in November.
“I don’t often make this kind of promises, but OlaBola The Musical is going to blow your mind,”continued Tiara.
OlaBolaThe Musical will be showcased at Istana Budaya from Feb 8 to March 11. Ticket sales are currently on. For more information visit www.olabolamusical.com. The first 3,000 CIMB cardmembers will receive a 40% discount on tickets.
