"This was based on our intelligence that IS terrorists of various nationalities had been instructed to infiltrate countries after losing control over its territories in Iraq and Syria.

"Our intelligence confirmed that IS also works with terror groups either at the global level or in South East Asia, including Abu Sayyaf and Jamaatul Mujahideen, for planned attacks in Malaysia," he told reporters after attending a National Sports Day event organised in Bota today.

He said that of the total, nine of the terrorists identified as members from Abu Sayyaf; three from Fetullah Turki (listed as a terror group by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation); three from an Albanian terror group with links to IS; and four from Bangladesh's Jamaatul Mujahideen.
