KOTA KINABALU: Three Russian women were arrested for offering sex services to locals via the WeChat application, and abusing their social visit passes.

Police, who uncovered the prostitution activity following a tip-off, had been monitoring the women’s movements over the past few days.

A police team raided a hotel room at Plaza Wawasan here at 5.10pm yesterday and found the women – aged 18, 22 and 28 – with two local men.

State Crime Investigation chief senior assistant commissioner Datuk Salehhudin Abd Rahman said police seized condoms, three handphones and RM2,240 in cash.

"The men, aged 36 and 48, are believed to be customers and we detained them for questioning to facilitate an investigation.

"We checked the women's passports. They have been in the country for a few days on a social visit pass.

"While in the state, they have been using the WeChat application to look for customers," he said.

The women will be investigated under Section 372B of the Penal Code for soliciting for the purpose of prostitution.

Salehuddin added that the arrest of the European women for prostitution was the first such case in Sabah this year.

On Sept 13, police arrested two Thai women for soliciting for the purposes of prostitution at a hotel in Penampang district.

Two local men were also detained for questioning and were later released.
