KL to do away with roadside traders by 2020: FT Minister

KUALA LUMPUR: There will be no more roadside traders in the city by 2020, said the Federal Territories Ministry.
Its minister, Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, said all traders will either relocate or make the switch to food trucks.
He said the ministry will also ensure that traders will not do their cooking by the roadside but they will instead have to prepare food elsewhere before selling it at the premises provided for them.
"Right now, there are thousands of roadside traders in the Federal Territory.
"The move will involve hawkers selling banana fritters or nasi lemak by the roadside, all of whom will be relocated," he said.
Tengku Adnan said roadside traders will be given an upgrade under a new system, in addition to the premises for them to do business.
He was speaking to reporters after officiating the 2017 annual general meeting of the Malaysian Indian Muslim Congress (KIMMA) at Wisma Sejarah here today.
Also present were KIMMA president Datuk Seri Syed Ibrahim Kader and Federal Territory KIMMA liaison chairman Asraf @ Mohaideen Abdul Kadar Kamaldin.
Syed Ibrahim supported the proposed move, saying that it will help improve traffic in the city and prevent many food-borne illnesses and health problems such as food poisoning.
