Malaysia lose to Thailand 2-0 in the final of the Asean Football Federation (AFF) Under-19 Championship.

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia ended up as the bridesmaid for the fourth time in the Asean Football Federation (AFF) Under-19 Championship.

At the Thuwunna Stadium in Yangon last night, Malaysia went down 2-0 to 10-boy Thailand in the final.

The Thais took the lead through Ekanit Panya in the 49th minute. Two minutes later, they doubled their lead through Kritsada Kaman.

But Thailand were reduced to 10 boys after Wudtichai Kumkeam was shown a straight red by referee Clifford Daypuyat in the 67th minute.

Enjoying numerical advantage, coach Bojan Hodak’s team pushed forward to get back into the game but the Thais held on to bag their fifth title.

Malaysia lost their previous three finals to Myanmar (4-0 in 2003 and 1-0 in 2005) and Vietnam (1-0 in 2007).

Malaysian started their campaign in Yangon with wins over Laos 4-1, Singapore 3-1, Timor Leste 3-0 before holding Thailand 1-1 to win Group A.

They then edged Myanmar 5-4 in the sudden-death penalty shootout in the semi-finals after the match was tied 0-0 in regulation time on Friday.

In the third-placing playoff, Indonesia played one of the most entertaining games of the tournament to thrash hosts Myanmar 7-1.

Last year, Malaysia – under German coach Frank Bernhardt – failed to reach the semi-finals after shock losses to Timor Leste (3-2) and hosts Vietnam (3-1). Australia emerged champions after whipping Thailand 5-1 in the final.
