GEORGE TOWN: Policemen who flagged down a motorist for stopping in the yellow box found that he had 102 unpaid traffic summonses.
The fines, all of which were for illegal parking, totalled RM5,000.
Penang police had issued the motorist 97 summonses and another five were issued in other states.
A traffic policeman tried to reprint all the summonses using a handheld printer, but ran out of paper midway.
A new roll had to be put in as the summonses were from 10 years ago.
The shock did not stop there.
The driver, a former salesman in his 30s, confessed to reporters during the traffic operation in Jalan Patani yesterday that he had even more summonses which he had been trying to settle from about six years ago.
“Since the total amount was too big, a policeman told me to settle the summonses for running the red light first,” he said.
“I was told that the illegal parking summonses could be kept temporarily. Since I didn’t face any problems renewing my road tax, I just let them be.”
He added that during his time as a salesman, he often had to stop his car in front of shops to deliver goods.
“That was why I got so many illegal parking summons.
“Although the total fines are a lot, I will pay for them and I promise not to park illegally anymore,” he said, adding that the traffic police had promised to help him lodge an appeal with Bukit Aman for a reduction.
A check by journalists on the driver’s car registration showed that the man also had 40 outstanding traffic compounds from the Penang Island City Council since 2014.
George Town OCPD Asst Comm Anuar Omar said traffic policemen issued a total of 220 summonses to motorists during the three-hour traffic operation.
“The serious offences included seven for running the red light, seven for using mobile phones while driving and 10 for not wearing seat belts.
“We also issued 14 warrants of arrest during the operation,” he said
