SLIM RIVER: A 34-year-old Indonesian man was charged at the magistrate’s court here today with three terror-related offences.
Rino Kaswara Kasmar, a tailor, nodded his head as a sign that he understood the charges read to him before magistrate Intan Nurul Farena Zainal Abidin.
However, no plea was recorded.
For the first offence, Rino Kaswara was charged with knowingly encouraging membership in the Telegram group 'AnsharulKhilaafah of Filibin-Indonesia' under the name of ‘Rijal Mujahideen Minangkabau’ among Mujahideen Indonesia Timur (MIT) members and Islamic State (IS) members.
He was alleged to have committed the offence at Medan Niaga, Jalan Pasar, Pekan Slim River here between May 2 and June 12, and he was charged under Section 130G (b) of the Penal Code which provides for life imprisonment or a jail term of 30 years, or a fine.
For the second offence, Rino Kaswara was charged with supporting the IS terrorist group by pledging the oath of loyalty in the same Telegram chat group at the same location on May 2.
For this offence, he was charged under Section 130J (1)(a) of the Penal Code which provides for imprisonment of up to 30 years, or a fine; and is liable to forfeiture of assets involved in the commission of the act, if found guilty.
For the third offence, Rino Kaswara was charged with possessing IS-related images on his Lenovo mobile phone.
He was alleged to have committed the offence at a Bazar Majlis Daerah Tanjung Malim (MDTM), Jalan Pasar, Pekan Slim River on June 12.
For this offence, he was charged under Section 130JB (1)(a) of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum seven years' jail term, or a fine and possible forfeiture of the items, upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor Syalia Ain Zainuddin prosecuted, while the accused was unrepresented.
Nurul Farena fixed Aug 8 for mention and the hearing will be transferred to the Kuala Lumpur High Court, pending consent sought for the transfer of the charges
