KUALA LUMPUR: Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar has conceded that a handful of policemen solicit or accept bribes from foreigners while conducting random checks.

He said the matter is not easy to control, but that the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) has taken various drastic measures, including taking action against personnel involved in such activities.

“PDRM had previously issued a circular to stop (police from conducting) random checks on foreigners without the presence of senior officers,” he said during a question-and-answer session after presenting a lecture entitled “Challenges and Strategies of a New Decade” at the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between PDRM and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in Jalan Semarak yesterday.

Khalid said the circular was issued in 2006 and clearly stated that police personnel can only conduct checks in the presence of a senior police officer, in integrated and well-planned operations with other agencies.

"These are among the measures taken by PDRM to prevent police personnel from taking advantage of foreigners, especially foreign students in the country,” he said, adding that various steps will be taken to further address the problem and ensure it does not worsen.

Also present at the event were Bukit Aman Crime Investigation Department director Datuk Seri Mohmad Salleh, Bukit Aman Management director Datuk Seri Zulkifli Abdullah, Kuala Lumpur Police chief Datuk Amar Singh and UTM vice chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Wahid Omar. -- BERNAMA
