SIBU: The former host of a TV programme has been charged at the magistrate's court here with insulting Watson Nyambek after allegedly making degrading remarks about the former national sprinter's late father.
Azizul Ammar, 50, of Segambut, Kuala Lumpur was charged under Section 504 of the Penal Code with intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of the peace.
The producer of the programme, Abdul Ghani Mohd. Mokhtar, 41, was also charged with the same offence.
The offence provides for a jail sentence of up to two years, a fine, or both if convicted.
Magistrate Saiful Sayoti released the duo on a bail of RM3,500 in one surety each.
He also ordered them to appear in court on July 4 for pre-trial.
The offence was allegedly committed at 11.30am on April 22 at Hotel Medan.
Azizul had allegedly mimicked the sound of a goat when he pronounced "Nyambek", Watson's patrynomic last name during the Sukan Tak Sentral comedy show aired on TV3.
Primeworks Studios chief executive officer Datuk Ahmad Izham Omar led a delegation comprising Azizul and the programme production crew to apologise to Watson during a closed-door meeting.
Azizul and the production crew were also suspended.
Watson lodged a police report on April 24 against Azizul, urging police to investigate the motive behind the insult despite having received apologies from the production company.
