ALOR SETAR: A Sungai Petani-based marine oil distribution company suffered losses amounting to RM4.5mil after being a victim of email spoofing.
Kedah police chief Commissioner Datuk Asri Yusoff said it is believed that the public listed company was cheated via a link with spyware software sent to its email account.
At a press conference on Sunday, Comm Asri said two police reports were lodged by the company - one on Thursday and another on Saturday.
"We believe the spam email was sent to the company by an international syndicate, which set up an email account that is similar to the Singaporean company where it gets its oil supply from," he said.
He added that an employee clicked on the link without realising that the account was in fact spyware.
He said that this allowed the syndicate to receive all email correspondences between both companies.
Comm Asri said that the company then received an email on May 31 requesting payment of US$309,000 (RM1.3mil), which was made to a bank in Greensboro in the United States.
He also said that the company received another email with a similar address on June 2 requesting US$760,000 (RM3.2mil) to be made to the account of a Hong Kong-based company.
Comm Asri said the complainant lodged the reports after checking with the company in Singapore when realising that something was amiss.
