MB explains Sivarasa’s mosque visit to Selangor Sultan

SHAH ALAM: Selangor Ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has been briefed on what transpired at the An-Nur Mosque in Kampung Melayu Subang last week during Subang MP R. Sivarasa’s visit.
Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Azmin Ali said he had briefed Sultan Sharafuddin.
However, it was incumbent on everyone to not misuse mosques or the surau, he said.
“Everyone should respect the guidelines that have been fixed by the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) to ensure that mosques and surau remain solely as places of worship,” Azmin told reporters at the State Secretariat yesterday.
Sivarasa came under fire after he attended a breaking of fast event at the mosque and allegedly delivered a political speech in the prayer hall.
Following this, Sultan Sharafuddin ordered Jais to investigate the mosque committee for allowing this to happen.
The Ruler had on many occasions reminded everyone in Selangor that mosques and surau should not be used for political purposes.
According to media reports, Jais director Datuk Haris Kasim said Sultan Sharafuddin’s displeasure was relayed to him by the Ruler’s private secretary Datuk Munir Bani.
Meanwhile, Azmin said elected representatives who wanted to meet their constituents at mosques or surau could do so outside the prayer hall. He also clarified that Sivarasa was not representing him or the Selangor Mentri Besar’s office, as reported by the media, when visiting the mosque.
Sivarasa was there in his capacity as the constituency’s MP, Azmin added.
Sivarasa has clarified that he was there to deliver a RM71,000 donation for all the mosques and surau in the constituency.
He added that he merely conveyed his greetings and spoke about his experiences visiting mosques during the fasting month.
