IGP sees possibility of more arrests ahead after Turks held

KUALA LUMPUR: Bukit Aman does not rule out the possibility of more arrests of people considered being threats to national security.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said it was possible that more arrests would be made following the detention of three Turkish nationals over the past few days.

"We will protect the country against any threat, be it foreign or domestic.

"The safety and security of all is our priority," he told a press conference on Friday after witnessing the handing over ceremony for the Bukit Aman Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department director’s post between outgoing director Comm Datuk Rusli Ahmad and new director Comm Datuk Tajuddin Md Isa.

The IGP also confirmed the arrest of a third Turkish national on Thursday, saying he was detained for allegedly being a threat to national security, but but refused to elaborate.

The Star had earlier reported on the arrest of Ismet Ozcelik, who was picked up at around 5.30pm on Thursday.

He was travelling in a car with his son Suheyl and a third unidentified individual when they were asked to stop and alight from their vehicle.

According to Ozcelik’s lawyer Muhammad Faizal Faiz Mohd Hasani, the car was stopped by a man and his client was taken away.

Ozcelik and Suheyl’s phones were also confiscated.

“Suheyl and the other man were not arrested, but they cannot be contacted at the moment,” Muhammad Faizal said.

Ozcelik's arrest comes after the arrests of international school head Turgay Karaman and businessman Ihsan Aslan on Tuesday.

Ozcelik was supposed to stand trial on May 3 and 4 for allegedly obstructing civil servants from carrying out their duties.

However, the trial was postponed to May 19 for case management following Karaman's absence as a witness.

On Tuesday evening, Suheyl lodged a police report at the Damansara police station after he believed that Karaman was abducted by unidentified men at Wisma E&C in Damansara Heights.

Suheyl and Karaman were supposed to meet with their lawyers but Karaman never showed up.

On Wednesday, Khalid confirmed that Karaman was not abducted but arrested for activities that threatened the safety of Malaysia under Section 130 of the Penal Code.

KUALA LUMPUR: The two Turkish men who were arrested on Tuesday were considered a threat to national security, said the Inspector General of Police.

Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar, however, refused to comment on the intentions of the two men except to say they posed a threat to the country.

"I just want to say this, we Malaysians are a peace loving people.

"We do not welcome foreigners who cause problems for our country.

"We also do not welcome them to come here and bring their problems to our country," Khalid told reporters at the Police Academy here on Thursday.

Asked if there was pressure from the Turkish authorities to take action against the two men, Khalid just said there was no pressure from anyone for such actions to be taken.

It was reported that Turgay Karaman and Ihsan Aslan, who were earlier believed to have been abducted, were arrested on Tuesday for alleged links to the Islamic State (IS) terror group.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the anti-terrorism unit had been monitoring the communications made by the two and had reason to arrest them under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act (Sosma) for further investigation.

IGP Khalid: 'Abducted' Turkish man was arrested

SHAH ALAM: Police confirmed that a Turkish man, who was earlier thought to have been abducted along with another individual, was actually arrested.

"PDRM confirms that Turkish nationals T. Karaman and I. Aslan have been caught for activities that threaten the safety of Malaysia under Section 130 of the Penal Code," said Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar in a tweet at 12.14pm Wednesday.
Earlier at a Police Day function, Khalid had told reporters that police were investigating claims that a Turkish national (identified as Turgay Karaman) was abducted in Damansara Heights on Tuesday, after a police report was made.
According to a Turkish blog, the second man identified by Khalid is businessman Ihsan Aslan, who was thought to have been "abducted" with Karaman on Tuesday.

Karaman, who is believed to be the principal of an international school in Ipoh, was supposed to testify in a trial set for May 3 and 4.
Karaman was supposed to meet his friend, Suheyl Ozcelik, at their lawyer's office in Damansara Heights at 4.30pm Tuesday but did not turn up.
