Sanjeevan charged with defaming police via MyWatch Facebook page

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk R. Sri Sanjeevan was today charged at the magistrate's court here with defaming police via the Malaysian Crime Watch Task Force (MyWatch) Facebook page.

Sanjeevan, who is the chairman of the anti-crime non-governmental organisation (NGO), pleaded not guilty to the offence before magistrate Mahyuddin Mohmad Som.

Sanjeevan, 32, was accused of publishing allegations on the MyWatch Facebook page against the police at the 11th floor of Menara 2, Bukit Aman police headquarters, Dang Wangi here at about 8.30am on Jan 3.

His charge under Section 500 of the Penal Code for defamation carries an imprisonment for a term which may extend to two years or a fine or both, if convicted.

Sanjeevan posted a RM3,000 bail with one surety and his case will be up for mention on May 26.

The article allegedly posted by the accused was in relation to a gambling ring leader.

Deputy public prosecutors Saiful Hazmi Mohd Saad and Shukor Abu Bakar prosecuted while Sanjeevan was represented by counsel Ravin Jay and S. Prakash.
