Home Ministry rubbishes viral social media message on phone, internet surveillance

NST

PUTRAJAYA: The Home Ministry has dismissed a viral social media message alleging that it has implemented a new law allowing it to record and monitor all private communications via phone calls and social media platforms in the country.
The ministry's secretary-general, Datuk Seri Alwi Ibrahim, said today that the message is false and that the ministry has implemented no such law.
He said that the message, which went viral yesterday, was recycled from a previous hoax.
Alwi advised the public to beware of such messages.
The social media message claimed that the Home Ministry is implementing a new communications law allowing it to monitor and keep records of private phone calls.
It also said the ministry will conduct surveillance on all social media platforms, such as WhatsApp, Twitter, Facebook and online forums.
It alleged that all electronic communications devices are now connected to the ministry's surveillance system.
