Technician pleads guilty to providing financial services to terrorists

KUALA LUMPUR: A 35-year-old technician was sentenced to seven years in jail by the High Court here for directly providing financial services for terrorist purposes.
With this sentence, Bukhori Che Noor (pic) is the first person to be jailed for directly providing services for terrorist purposes, an offence under Section 130O(1)(b) of the Penal Code.
Justice Azman Abdullah meted out the sentence against Bukhori - who pleaded guilty on Monday -  and set his jail sentence to run from the date of his arrest on June 30 last year.
In his ruling, Azman said the accused is 35 years old and should know the difference between good and bad before getting himself involved in supporting terrorism.
He said there was an increasing number of terrorist cases registered at the High Court, adding that this shows the seriousness of the threat.
"The Islamic State (IS) is a new threat to the country after communism in the early years and anything related to terror offences is bad," he said.
Justice Azman then asked Bukhori what he had hoped to achieve by being involved in terrorism.
"Do you want to go to heaven by committing the offence?" he said.
The father of two  was charged with directly giving financial services by allowing the deposit and transfer of money from his bank account for the benefit of terrorism.
He committed the offence at the Maybank IPC branch at the Prai Industrial Estate, Jalan Chain Ferry, Taman Inderawasih Prai, Seberang Prai Tengah, in Penang between November 2015 and June 30,2016.
Based on the statement of facts, a protected witness confirmed that the accused was a member of the "Gagak Hitam" Telegram chat group and a telecommunication company confirmed that the handphone number used for messages in the group was registered under Bukhori's name.
The witness also confirmed that on March 26 last year, Muhammad Wanndy Muhammad Jedi or "Akhi Wanndy" had directed members of the chat group members to deposit a donation of RM11,090 into Bukhori's bank account in stages.
Earlier, Bukhori said he was the sole breadwinner of his family, earning RM2,000 per month.
Bukhori, who was unrepresented, later asked for a lighter sentence as he regretted what he had done.
DPP Muhammad Fadzlan Mohd Noor however urged the court to mete out a deterrent sentence to serve as a lesson for the accused in view of the increasing number of such cases, adding that the guilty plea should not be considered a mitigating factor.
