Fugitive rams cop with car to evade JB roadblock, is shot

JOHOR BARU: In a bid to evade a police road-block mounted near the Plentong Industrial Park here yesterday, a man on the run from the law rammed his car into one of four policemen.

As the police corporal lay on the ground, with his leg broken in three parts and an injured hip, a police multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) was despatched to intercept the getaway Proton Wira and bring the criminal to book.
The chase, which began at about 2.30pm, ended with the two vehicles colliding near a bank at Jalan Rosmerah 2/11, Taman Johor Jaya.
Seri Alam police chief Supt Jokhiri Abd Aziz said at that juncture, the fugitive, who was armed with an iron rod, emerged from the car to attack the policemen, who then shot him in the waist in self-defence and arrested him.
He said the 30-year-old suspect was wanted in 10 criminal cases, including for car-jacking and drug-related offences, adding that the car was reported stolen in Skudai recently.
"The man will be investigated for attempted murder in relation to ramming the 33-year-old police corporal who is attached to the Johor Baru (south) police headquarters.
"The injured policeman has been warded at the Sultan Ismail Hospital in a stable condition," he said in a statement.
Jokhiri said two policemen on patrol spotted the suspect in a car at Jalan Perak near Pasir Gudang here, and ordered him to stop.
However, the man sprayed diesel at the police MPV, using a rubber hose connected to two drums attached to the car, and sped away.
"While driving towards Taman Johor Jaya, the suspect rammed into the police corporal before he was nabbed," said Jokhiri. -- BERNAMA
