Rape suspect who escaped from police car recaptured

KOTA KINABALU: A 29-year-old rape suspect, who escaped while under police escort to the crime scene on Saturday, has been recaptured by Beluran police 74-hours after his escape.
Beluran district police chief Supt Shivananthan Velautham in confirming the arrest of the suspect, said that the suspect was still bound by police handcuffs when he was arrested at around 8.30pm at a house in Taman Mas Indah Ladang Meliau Nangoh Beluran.
He said that the suspect was caught by members of the public and handed over.
The suspect, who was identified Nasrudi Ambo (pic), an Indonesian labourer, had escaped from a police car while being brought back to the crime scene of the alleged rape case on Feb 25.
The suspect, who was arrested on Feb 20 in connection with a 17-year-old girl, had told three accompanying policemen that he wanted to break fast as he was fasting on that day.
He was cuffed from behind but police switched it to the front so that he could eat, and police then left him alone in the car when they went to buy water for him from a nearby sundry shop after he told police that he was thirsty.
Supt Sivananthan said when the policemen returned they found him missing.
"They thought that they had locked the doors before leaving the suspect alone," he said in an earlier report after the escape.
They saw him running towards a nearby oil palm estate and a report was lodged at 2pm on Feb 21 as they launched a manhunt.
