PUTRAJAYA: A general manager of a government agency who is accused of awarding projects to his wife’s company has been remanded for seven days.
Putrajaya magistrate Nik Isfahanie Tasnim Wan Abdul Rahman ordered the 62-year-old to be held until next Wednesday following an application by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
The suspect is being investigated for abuse of power under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009.
Handcuffed and clad in orange MACC lock-up attire, the suspect was brought to court at 9.40am yesterday.
On Wednesday, MACC investigators had arrested the general manager at his office in Kuala Lumpur.
The suspect’s 38-year-old wife was also detained at her office in the operation, codenamed Ops Nafas.
She was, however, released after having her statement recorded.
The suspect is alleged to have allowed projects to be awarded to his wife’s two companies over a three-year period after he assumed the post of deputy general manager at the agency.
He rose to the position of general manager in September last year.
Officers seized stacks of documents from the couple’s offices and home.
Checks revealed that the woman had set up her two companies in 2010 and 2015.
