MANJUNG: It was supposed to be a joyous occasion for Mariaty Bakar who had looked forward to attending her daughter’s wedding today.

But the 58-year-old was killed after being hit by a truck tyre that came loose from a vehicle, which police are still trying to find.

Maisuri Ahmad, 24, said her mother was gardening outside their home in Jalan Ayer Tawar-Beruas, Kampung Bakar Bata, when the freak accident occurred at about 6.30pm.

Maisuri was watching television when she heard a loud noise outside.

“I got out and saw my mother lying motionless on the ground,” she said.

She tried but failed to revive her mother as blood oozed out from both ears.

Maisuri said her eldest sister Mazni’s wedding was to have been held today.

“My mother was supposed to join us for the trip to the groom’s house,” Maisuri said.

Mariaty’s husband, Mahamad Ajmi Ahmad, 64, said he was at his mother’s place at Kampung Batu 19, when he got a call from his daughter.

“I did not know she had died. When I rushed home, I saw an ambulance heading towards Beruas,” said Mahamad, adding that he was heartbroken when he found out her fate.

Perak traffic police chief Supt Wan Jamil Wan Chik said initial investigations indicated that the tyre came loose and bounced off a kerb before hitting Mariaty.

“Mariaty was hit on the head and died on the spot,” he said.

“We are trying to track down the lorry,” said Supt Wan Jmil, adding that the body was sent to the Seri Manjung Hospital for post-mortem.

“The incident would be investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act.” — Bernama
